Here’s a fact you might not know about Quin: We are 80% women. Not only this, but our co-founders are both women too. What are the odds of that? Quite low, actually. Roughly 17% of VC-funded startups are founded by women.

Successful engineer = white male?

I entered the engineering world at age 19. Throughout my studies, I had two female lecturers.

All the other lecturers were male.

As I progressed through my studies, I took interning jobs for vacation work.

All the other engineers were male.

I took my first job at a software consulting company. I met my first female peer.

All the other engineers were male.

I took my second and third jobs in software development.

All the other engineers were male.

I took my fourth job at Quin Technology.

80% of the engineers are female!

If you were to train a machine learning model on what a successful engineer would look like based on my experience, it would be a white man in his mid to late 40s.

Inspiring

As a woman in tech, I have found this last year at Quin to be inspiring. While I have met peers throughout my career, I have never had a role model to show me what a women-led tech company would look like. Most of the leading women in STEM, the Sheryl Sandbergs of the world, seemed out of reach and intangible. I’ve always been the most senior woman engineer on the team. This has never bothered me before, but as I’ve become older, I’ve come to realise that I’m not quite sure what a female tech lead would be. Is she strong and opinionated? Does she speak her mind? What happens when she decides to start a family? And most importantly, why do I even need to ask these questions?!

Quin x Winners

Isabella and Cyndi – the founding Quinners – have shown me that there is a space for women-led tech companies. And it is not an easy space. The number of women leaders in tech is still lagging, but it’s important for companies like Quin to show girls and young women that there is opportunity for change.
